It just seems like the idea of dying from AIDS or a respiratory virus just doesn’t seem like a thing to them. I don’t think SARS would have been as scary to me if there hadn’t been all the stuff from the mid nineties (plus reading The Stand and Andromeda Strain) I’d learned about viruses and pandemics. SARS scared the crap out of me, but it was luckily not as contagious as the new SARS and was pretty quickly contained. Ebola was probably scary to them as well, but so rare that it wasn’t scary for long. Most kids in their early 20’s would have experienced H1N1 as their first real scary virus thing. Then we had Anthrax being mailed around right after 9/11. If you think about it, we had HIV, and then the Ebola outbreak that was happening when the movie Outbreak came out (I can still see the Ebola magazine covers from the mid 90’s). She learned about AIDS when they didn’t even know what it was and people were terrified that it could be airborne or in droplets like the flu. Yeah, my sister (she’s full blown gen x) was remarking that the teens and twenty-somethings that were partying at Spring Break were probably not as scared or just naturally paying attention to how germs could be spread because they didn’t learn in detail about communicable diseases at a formative age like we did.
